How can Drivers Prepare for their DOT Physicals?

A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is required in order for a commercial truck driver, or a similar vehicle operator, to effectively renew their commercial driver’s license. Without approval from a medical examiner or doctor, drivers may experience significant delays in their driving career.

However, it is fairly easy to prepare for the DOT physical by taking a few necessary precautions before the test. Effective preparedness can help ensure that you pass your physical and that you won’t have to retake the exam under other circumstances. So what should drivers do in order to prepare for their DOT physicals?

Avoid heavy meals and caffeinated beverages before the exam

Whenever you begin your DOT physical, it is important to avoid heavy meals and caffeine. This is because increased food consumption and caffeine may provide a false positive for high blood pressure and other conditions that inhibit your exam.

For example, caffeine can raise blood pressure for a short period of time and may lead to a slight increase during your exam. Try and avoid that extra cup of morning coffee before the exam. Additionally, foods high in cholesterol, sugar, and fat could provide false positives for other chronic diseases.

Before your exam, take the time to eat a light breakfast that is low-fat, low-sugar, and low in caffeine. Additionally, high-salt and sodium-filled foods could raise blood pressure in the short term.

Rest and relax before your exam

Stress can contribute to high blood pressure and other chronic disease in the same way frequent consumption of unhealthy foods can. Before your DOT physical, take some time to relax and de-stress.

Use a personal day when possible to find a time that works best for you to complete the exam. Don’t try to cram it on top of your other commitments. If you need to get you exam ASAP, try visiting a medical provide that provides walk-in clinic access.

3 Tips for Pumpkin Carving

Halloween festivities usually entail, pumpkin picking, house decorating, apple cider & of course pumpkin carving! However, did you know that there are thousands of injuries every year form pumpkin carving? Carving a pumpkin may be tradition but can prove to be very dangerous when you are not completely aware of what you are doing. We have some tips you should follow to ensure your pumpkin carving goes as planned!

1. Clean your surroundings

When you finally get that big pumpkin you found in the field & take it home to carve do not rush with your set up! Most accidents happen not from the carving itself but from the environment around you when you are carving. If you leave your environment messy, you are leaving opportunities for you to trip, slip & fall carrying sharp objects. Make sure to clean your work area too! Having a sticky desk or a slippery desk can cause the pumpkin to fall all over the place. A list of other things to wash should include:

  • Hands
  • knife
  • Other Utensils
  • Pumpkin

2. Don’t sharpen your knife

Contrary to what you would think a sharp knife while carving pumpkins can lead to serious injury! Most of us are not use to the metrics of a pumpkin, so when you start to carve with a sharp knife you have a very high possibility of cutting through the pumpkin & hitting your hand. Some other things that can happen with a super sharp knife id cutting in the pumpkin & getting it stuck. If your knife gets stuck in the pumpkin please make sure to slowly pull it out rather than yanking it out. Yanking it out can cause you to lose control of the knife & may problems can occur in that area.

3. Buy a kit

The easiest way to avoid all problems from pumpkin carving is to buy a pumpkin carving kit! As easy of an alternative as it sounds the tools in a pumpkin carving kit are made specifically for carving the pumpkin. When should I vaccinate my child?

You should vaccinate your child when they are newborns first. A newborn is very vulnerable to all diseases. A vaccination takes away the prep time your body needs to adapt & fight a virus. If your newborn is infected it could 3-4 days for the body to develop antibodies; by this time the virus may have caused serious illness or death. After the vaccination as a newborn pay attention to the grade school vaccinations; most of the time they are required with a physical to enter school.

Beat sunburn this summer!

Its everyone’s favorite time of year again! One of the best parts about summer is the weather & being outside enjoying the sun. However most of the time we often forget that the sun can actually hurt us if we are not careful. Did you know that the most common form of cancer is melanoma skin cancer? The suns rays

The sun has 3 forms of UV light. UVA, UVB, UVC. Out of these three only 2 actually, make it to earth’s surface (UVA & UVB). The suns rays are radiation; our skin can withstand a set amount of radiation before it starts to burn. Sunburn is a radiation burn on a cellular level, this is why it should be taken seriously.

How do I know I have sunburn?

If you have a mild case of sunburn your symptoms will include:

  • redness on skin
  • peeling
  • dehydration
  • a slight headache

If you gave a more serve case of sunburn your symptoms will include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches/migraines
  • high pulse
  • blacking out
  • extreme burn & pain

How to prevent sunburn

Sunblock is the best way to protect yourself from the sun when you will have prolonged exposure. A common misconception on sunblock is, only applying once or every 30 mins. If you are exercising, sweating or swimming you must apply sunblock directly after because it will wash off of your body!
