Common Cold Treatment During Fall & Winter

Winter means extra family time, holidays, and beautiful snow falling, but it also means an increased chance of illness from the common cold. The cold affects each patient roughly 2-3 times each year, so it’s important to be prepared. Rather you’re taking care of yourself or a loved one, utilize these tips to treat the common cold the best way possible.

What is a Common Cold?

The common cold is a virus that spreads quickly and easily from one person to the next. The virus attacks your immune system causing many unpleasant symptoms including:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Sore throat

There is no vaccine to prevent the common cold, but hand washing and good hygiene are able to reduce your risk. Cold symptoms typically last 3-5 days.

How Can I Treat it at Home?

You can treat most of your cold symptoms right from the comfort of your own home! First, remember the importance of hydration. Even if you don’t feel like eating much, be sure to drink plenty of water and enjoy clear liquids like chicken broth. Try to get as much rest as possible. It can be annoying to take time away from your life to rest, but it will ultimately help you heal quicker.

You can manage your other cold symptoms with over the counter medications designed to target congestion, runny nose, cough, and sore muscles. Keeping the air around you moist with a humidifier will also help keep your cough and congestion at bay.

Can I Get Treatment at an Urgent Care?

Yes, you can get treatment at an urgent care! There is no cure for the common cold, but an urgent care can help to manage your symptoms if home remedies aren’t cutting it. The common cold can cause other issues such as sinus infections or ear infections too, which will need prescription antibiotics from an urgent care health provider. Try to treat your symptoms at home and let the cold run its course first. If symptoms continue to get worse or don’t show any signs of improvement, it’s time to visit the urgent care.

Our urgent care facility is staffed with cold treatment experts who are ready to make you feel better however we can! How to Create Healthier Family Holiday Traditions!

Family holiday traditions are the best part of this time of year. Traditions bring people together, make you feel nostalgic, and offers a break from the stress of normal day-to-day life. Unfortunately, many holiday traditions that families share aren’t so healthy. We want to help change that this year! Check out these tips and suggestions to make your holiday traditions a little healthier.

Being Healthy Doesn’t Mean Giving Up Fun

It’s important to note that creating healthy traditions doesn’t mean giving up the family fun. In fact, some healthy traditions are even more fun than the unhealthy alternatives! You’ve just got to go into it with an open mind, ready to have fun. Encourage your family members to do the same. If parents talk about new traditions like they’ll be fun, kids are sure to follow suit!

New Healthy Holiday Traditions to Try

If you’re in need of healthy holiday tradition ideas, give one of these a try!

  • Outdoor winter fun – you may think cold weather forces you to stay inside, but that isn’t the case. Try a fun winter outdoor activity to get everyone up and moving. Snowboarding, snow tubing, ice skating, and even building a snowman are some great things to try.
  • Try New Recipes – trying a new recipe together is a great way to get everyone together, bonding in one room of the home. Find some healthy recipes to replace your traditional ones and give them a shot. If your kids love making Christmas cookies, they’ll still love it even if the recipe is a little more health conscious!
  • Caroling – caroling is an old-fashioned holiday tradition that’s making a comeback. It’s a great way to get out of the house and out of your comfort zone all at the same time! If you’re nervous, try to find a local caroling group that you can join in with until you get the hang of it.
  • Read Christmas stories – instead of just watching Christmas movies, encourage your children to read Christmas stories with you as a family. Take them out to buy a few new books and watch them fall in love with the holiday spirit on the pages!
